Reviews begin to improve

Updated existing reviews
One UK customer and one US customer have so far updated their reviews to welcome the new, improved sound quality in PocketPhonics.

LAER721 (US) said:

“This app has been improved and I like what I hear! I am so happy that the person who developed this app made the effort to improve the letter sounds. Thanks!”

Bugsey Brownwater (UK) said:

“The audio files are now much better - well done the developers for listening and acting upon concerns!”

Bugsey also asked why we don’t use swipe scrolling in the app. The reason is that having investigated how swipe scrolling is implemented, I’m not sure it would work well when children are trying to write some letters with their finger. For instance, the letter “F” has two horizontal lines in it, I think if the child tried to draw these horizontal lines, it would look like swipe scrolling.

I do though get the point that the next and previous buttons can be too small for some children. It’s something I’ll review again in the next major release. I have been surprised by how young some of our users are, and they are definitely younger than the children I did the usability testing with. Thus their motor skills may not be as developed.

Positive new reviews
I’ve had a couple of very positive, new reviews too (and no negative ones!).

Emmuk7 (UK) said of PocketPhonics Lite:

“fabulous. this application is great, it is free and lets you see what the paid for version will be like. my 3 year old loves the letters on it and the spelling games, especially when it gives her a gold star. off to buy the full version now.”

CH. Teo (Malaysia) said:

“4 stars since I was looking for self pronouncing phonic app which clearly has taught my son (or my son has taught himself) how letters sounds like, and I'm very satisfied.”

BTW his son is only 23 months, which must make him one of our youngest users!

What’s next?
Mr Teo also raised some suggestions for improvement that I’ll take into consideration when I undertake the next major release (probably for after Apple upgrade to iPhoneOS v3). In the meantime, there will continue to be some small improvements.

My major focus for the next couple of months is to finish off my next app. It’s a game for children and has nothing to do with phonics! More on that soon.
